Education in an Age of AI and Ecological Crisis - Launch Event
What a privilege it was to gather our school and the wider community for the official launch of the Centre for Earth and Ethics at St Michael's Grammar School.
Held during Science Week, the evening brought together students, parents, staff, alumni, researchers, school leaders and friends of St Michael's for our inaugural panel, Education in an Age of AI and Ecological Crisis, a rich and thought-provoking conversation about two of the defining challenges of our time.
Guided by the Centre's commitment to Explore, Envision and Enact, the launch invited us to slow down, listen, think deeply, and consider the kinds of world we want young people to help shape. Speakers and panellists explored the ethical, environmental, social and educational questions emerging at the intersection of technology, sustainability and humanity, challenging us to move beyond simple optimism towards meaningful action: curiosity, empathy, critical thinking, and care for people and planet.
A sincere thank you to our panellists, Hamish Curry, Marcia McKenzie, Sara Tolbert, Orla Glynn, with a video address by Kate Rigby. Along with our panel facilitator Matt Heinrich, and Rebecca Garcia Lucas, PhD, Director of the Centre for Earth and Ethics, along with organisers, students and all who joined us to mark this significant moment in the life of the School.
The Centre for Earth and Ethics represents an exciting new chapter in our ongoing commitment to learning from, with and for the world.
We look forward to the conversations, partnerships, research and action that will follow, as we work together to foster a thriving and just world.
